ACAP
African Census Analysis Project

ACAP is a joint initiative of the Population Studies Center, University of Pennsylvania and African institutions specializing in the demographic training and research. The African Census Analysis Project (ACAP) has three specific aims: to archive African census data, to train African researchers to utilize census data in their research, and to analyze these data using modern demographic and statistical techniques. The efforts currently include collaborating with faculty members at several African Universities and population institutions.

The international social science community of researchers and archivists has long felt a need for a new structured codebook standard to replace OSIRIS, but no universally-supported standard has yet emerged. Accordingly, in May 1995 Richard Rockwell, Executive Director of the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research, established a committee to develop a Document Type Definition (DTD) for an international codebook standard using Standard Generalized Markup Language, or SGML. In 1997, the DTD was made compliant with XML (Extensible Markup Language).
